City of Rochester, New Hampshire builds new Police StationAugust 6, 2003 In December 2002 the design team lead by architect Max Ferro from The Preservation Partnership began to put together plans for Rochester's new police station. MacLeod Consulting, Inc. designed the new steel structural frame and concrete foundation located on top of a difficult soil condition. As an essential facility, the police station must withstand the accelerations from an earthquake that geologists think possible for Rochester. The design process uncovered a tricky soil condition where the building is founded on a loose sandy soil underlain by a soft sandy silt and a layer of clay which would amplify the anticipated earthquake forces. The high earthquake demand called for the design of tougher joints and bracing to safely ride out a seismic event and yet render a building fully functional following such an event. The design includes provision for isolation of brick support to each floor and reinforcing within the veneer. In April of 2003, the City Council approved the $4,000,000 project to move on to construction.
Construction started on site in July of 2003 and is moving forward under the construction management leadership of Horne Construction, a firm based in Somersworth, New Hampshire, at a demanding pace with the police department expecting to occupy the completed building early in 2004.
